Tonys 2012: Six-time Nominee John Lithgow on Original Plays and a Modern-day Columnist

John Lithgow is already a legend, but he keeps getting more legendary — racking up a sixth Tony nomination for his titular turn in the Manhattan Theatre Club production of David Auburn’s The Columnist. EW sat down with the decorated theater veteran to talk Tony nominations, what it means to win and whether his eponymous Columnist could last in the digital age.
An innovative theatre project has been bridging the continental divide between drama pupils from Greece and the US since 1997. Now, for the first time, pupils in South Africa will be sharing the (virtual) stage. Twenty-one pupils from Sacred Heart College in Johannesburg are taking part in the TheatreLink project—pioneered by the Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) in New York.

David Auburn’s The Columnist has extended its run at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Directed by Daniel Sullivan, the play, which was scheduled to run though June 17, will now end its limited engagement on June 24.
